If the second floor Garment District view had a view, it would see her, a splash of colors and curves to meet all its grays and lines. It would also notice the opened package exploding in neon avocado tissue paper and a metallic eggplant box.
The stoic view would probably notice these two first, since the rest of the space was painted and draped in a base cream, hints of milk, and sparkles of glowing egg white.
She remembered her old boss ordering their kitchen be painted ecru. She always thought it sounded more like a small, delicate bird than a paint sample. A caged bird. And, she was sure that the blueberry bird of happiness was actually ecru. And, marrow caged.

That brought a lot of vivid colors to my mind. Also, ecru really does sound like a type of bird now that I think about it.
I wonder if it’s the emu thing?
I was thinking that too. I do tend to picture a large, albino emu whenever I hear the color.
I really thought this was an incredible piece of writing, I tried to find a best bit to comment about but it’s all great so I’m unable to choose. I’m looking forward to reading more of your stuff.
thank you so much.
With something like over 5000 different hues of white only, how the heck can they name all those colores without so werid names. And it must be a bird, it just sounds to perfect to not be one.
When I read it, I see an incandescently glowing wren, with creamy white feathers. Could just be me, though.
I like it!
Far too curious for sanity’s sake and well armed with the internet, I decided to look into the origin of the word: ecru (adj.)
1869, from French écru “raw, unbleached,” from Old French escru “raw, crude, rough” (13c.), from es- “thoroughly” (see ex-) + Latin crudus “raw” (see crude).
And now we know. ;]
Lovely post as always.
thanks for the laugh!
well, well “little.” i wuzz gonna ask about that — but (you already “know what”?!) it’s not being hung up on deffs — it’s the image. the big ever-expanding story your short story told. that’s the thing, you often start blowin’ up the balloon, and allow your readers to expand some with it. like i said, you tell a short, but much larger story.
thank you!
I know I have never commented on your blog before, but I read your blog all the time, and I think you are such an amazing writer. I have nominated you for the Gargie Award. http://girlinabasement.wordpress.com/2013/01/27/the-gargie-award/
This is a beautiful piece of writing — and the photo is gorgeous too. I ‘happened’ upon you through The Daily Prompt. So glad I did. Your writing and imagery and thoughts are exquisite.
thank you so much. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Oh my gosh! I could have sworn that I commented on this already, only to come to the page to make sure and find that I had not. Shame, shame, shame on me!
Love, love, love this so very much. It’s such an explosion of colors and emotions and, somehow, even a bit of hope in there. At least, I felt hopeful after reading it. Just … wonderful.
Hello! I nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award: http://infiniteawe.wordpress.com/2013/02/10/versatile-blogger-award/
I love how you play with colours here – such vivid writing!
This is beautiful. I can feel it. Passion is a grand and often overlooked thing and yet here you have it. All the best! Peace.
